Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of Senegal's national football team, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Tuesday. The former France international replaces Aliou Cissé, who was dismissed earlier this month after a string of poor results.

Vieira, 50, brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach. He won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France, and later managed clubs including New York City FC, Nice, and Crystal Palace. His most recent role was at Strasbourg, where he was sacked in 2024.

The federation said Vieira has signed a two-year contract with the objective of qualifying Senegal for the 2026 World Cup and winning the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal are currently third in their World Cup qualifying group with 10 points from six matches.

Vieira's first match in charge is expected to be a friendly against Morocco in September. He will be assisted by former Senegal defender Lamine Sané.
