FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — José Canale wasn't in the starting lineup in either of his previous two appearances for Paraguay in this World Cup. He made his first start a memorable one.
Canale scored on the first sudden-death penalty kick, Orlando Gill made a crucial save, and Paraguay stunned Germany 4-3 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw on Tuesday to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2010.
Canale, a 24-year-old defender, was named man of the match. He also scored Paraguay's goal in the 88th minute to force extra time after Germany's Florian Wirtz had opened the scoring in the 52nd minute.
In the shootout, Germany's Kai Havertz missed the first attempt, saved by Gill. Paraguay converted all four of their penalties before Canale stepped up to seal the win.
Paraguay will face the winner of the match between Brazil and Argentina in the quarterfinals.
