Pemba. ACT Wazalendo Chairman Othman Masoud Othman has criticized the current Union structure between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, saying it deprives the Isles of significant revenue and weakens its economy.
Mr Othman, who is the former Zanzibar’s First Vice President, made the remarks during a public rally in Pemba on April 27, 2026. He argued that the Union's revenue-sharing formula is unfair and disadvantages Zanzibar.
According to Othman, the current arrangement allows the Union government to collect most taxes and revenues, leaving Zanzibar with a smaller share that hampers its development. He called for a review of the structure to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
Othman's comments come amid ongoing debates in Tanzania about the Union's effectiveness and fairness. The ACT Wazalendo party has long advocated for constitutional reforms to address such grievances.
