Oshana governor Hofni Iipinge has called for the urgent development of a dual carriageway between Oshakati and Ondangwa, citing the region's growing traffic congestion and economic needs.
Delivering his state of the region address at Oshakati on Monday, Iipinge said the region's existing road infrastructure is under strain from increased vehicle numbers and population growth. He emphasized that a dual carriageway would improve safety and reduce travel time between the two towns, which are key economic hubs in northern Namibia.
The governor did not provide a specific timeline or cost estimate for the project but urged the central government to prioritize it in the national budget. The road is currently a single carriageway, and accidents have been reported due to high traffic volumes.
Local residents and business owners have expressed support for the proposal, noting that the road is often congested during peak hours. The Ministry of Works and Transport has not yet commented on the request.
