Spanish filmmaker Oliver Laxe has been announced as the guest of honor for the 2026 edition of Gabès Cinéma Fen, an international film festival held in Gabès, Tunisia. The festival, known for its focus on cinema from the Global South and environmental themes, will take place from April 24 to 30, 2026.
Laxe, born in Paris to Galician parents, is recognized for his distinctive cinematic style that blends documentary and fiction. His feature films include 'You All Are Captains' (2010), 'Mimosas' (2016), and 'Fire Will Come' (2019), which won the Un Certain Regard jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
The festival's programming will include a retrospective of Laxe's work, masterclasses, and discussions on his approach to filmmaking, which often explores themes of nature, spirituality, and human connection. Laxe's presence is expected to draw attention to the festival's mission of promoting independent and auteur cinema.
Gabès Cinéma Fen was founded in 2019 and has grown into a key cultural event in the region, attracting filmmakers and cinephiles from across the Mediterranean. The 2026 edition will also feature screenings of films from North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
