Notts County, the world's oldest professional football club, secured promotion to League One with a 2-0 victory over Salford City in the National League play-off final at Wembley Stadium on May 13, 2023. The win marked their return to the English Football League after a four-year absence.
Alassana Jatta opened the scoring for County in the first half, finishing from close range after a corner. The goal was his 10th of the season. The Magpies doubled their lead in the second half through a strike from midfielder John Bostock, who curled a shot into the top corner from outside the box.
The victory capped a remarkable season for Notts County, who finished second in the National League regular season with 107 points, just behind champions Wrexham. The Magpies had lost in the play-off semi-finals the previous season but bounced back strongly under manager Luke Williams.
Salford City, owned by a group of former Manchester United players including Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, had finished seventh in the regular season and reached the final after wins over Chesterfield and Stockport County in the play-offs.
