A Northland police officer claimed he had worked hours he had not for more than a year before it was discovered, RNZ can reveal.

Riki Toby, who was paid nearly $30,000 for overtime he did not do, said the offending started after going through a breakup. He was sentenced to 10 months of home detention in the Whangārei District Court.

The officer, who had been with the force for 13 years, admitted to filing false overtime claims between July 2023 and August 2024. He was charged with using a document for pecuniary advantage.

Police said the matter was referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, which is investigating. Toby has since resigned from the force.
