A North Korean defector living in South Korea has publicly appealed for help, fearing her mother will be forcibly repatriated from China to North Korea. The woman, identified by the pseudonym "Park," stated her mother was detained by Chinese authorities in February 2026 while attempting to escape North Korea.

Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have long documented that China routinely arrests and forcibly returns North Korean escapees, violating the principle of non-refoulement. Those repatriated face severe punishment, including imprisonment, torture, and execution in North Korea.

Park's case highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis. South Korea's Unification Ministry has stated it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance, but China maintains its policy of classifying North Korean escapees as illegal economic migrants subject to deportation.

The international community, including the United Nations, has repeatedly called on China to stop the forced returns and grant UN refugee agency access to detained North Koreans. The situation remains a critical human rights issue with no immediate resolution in sight.
