Nissan North America has issued a safety recall for 51 of its 2025 model year Leaf electric vehicles in the United States. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), addresses a critical defect in the high-voltage lithium-ion battery.
The automaker states that an internal short circuit can occur within the battery cells, which may lead to a thermal runaway event, increasing the risk of a fire. Notably, Nissan warns that this can happen "even when the vehicle is not in operation or being charged."
The recall, identified as number 24V-877, was officially posted by the NHTSA. Nissan will notify owners and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the entire battery pack assembly free of charge. The remedy is expected to be available by late June 2026.
As of the recall filing, Nissan was not aware of any fires, crashes, or injuries related to this condition. Owners with questions can contact Nissan customer service or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline.
