The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons football team is entering the 2026 season with high expectations. After finishing 6-3 in the regular season last year and narrowly missing the Section VI playoffs, the team is determined to take the next step. Head coach Russ Hammond emphasized that the goal is clear: make the playoffs and compete for a championship.
Key players returning include senior quarterback Jake Smith, who threw for over 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, and senior running back Marcus Johnson, who rushed for 800 yards. The offensive line, anchored by senior tackle Ryan Miller, is expected to be a strength. On defense, linebacker Alex Brown returns after leading the team in tackles.
The Falcons open their season on September 4 at home against Kenmore West. Hammond noted that the team's non-league schedule includes tough opponents like Williamsville South and Jamestown, which will prepare them for the competitive Class A division. 'We want to be playing our best football in November,' Hammond said.
Niagara Wheatfield last made the playoffs in 2023, when they advanced to the Section VI Class A semifinals. The team has not won a sectional title since 1998. With a mix of experienced seniors and promising underclassmen, the Falcons believe this could be their year to end the drought.
