The New York Islanders have dismissed head coach Patrick Roy and named Pete DeBoer as his replacement, the team announced. The move comes with the Islanders outside a playoff position late in the 2025-26 NHL season.

Roy, a Hall of Fame goaltender, was hired by the Islanders in January 2025. His tenure lasted just over one season. Under his leadership, the team struggled to find consistent form.

Pete DeBoer brings extensive NHL coaching experience, having previously led teams like the San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights, and New Jersey Devils to Stanley Cup Final appearances. His hiring is seen as an attempt to immediately stabilize the team.

This marks the second major coaching change in a week, following the Toronto Maple Leafs' dismissal of General Manager Brad Treliving. The late-season moves highlight the intense pressure on NHL franchises to secure postseason berths.
