Republican candidate for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District, Chris Bright, has voiced support for the federal Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. In a recent statement, Bright argued the legislation would establish voting requirements similar to those already in place in New Hampshire, specifically referencing the state's voter identification law.

The SAVE Act, a bill introduced in the U.S. House and Senate, seeks to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and to remove non-citizens from state voter rolls. Its lead sponsors are Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).

New Hampshire law currently requires voters to present an approved form of photo ID at the polls. If a voter does not have one, they can sign a challenged voter affidavit. The SAVE Act's proposed requirements for documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, would represent a more stringent federal standard.

Proponents of the SAVE Act argue it is necessary to ensure election integrity, while critics contend it could create barriers to voting for eligible citizens. The bill has not advanced to a vote in either chamber of Congress as of March 2026.
