The Newport Creamery restaurant chain, a Rhode Island institution, has been sold to a Cape Cod-based real estate developer. The sale was confirmed by the chain's parent company, Newport Restaurant Group, on March 28, 2026.
The buyer is identified as developer Michael Intoccia, principal of the Intoccia Companies. The terms of the sale were not disclosed. The transaction includes all 13 Newport Creamery locations across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
Newport Restaurant Group stated that the sale will allow it to focus on its other brands, including the upscale Castle Hill Inn. The company assured that all Newport Creamery employees will be retained by the new ownership.
Founded in 1928, Newport Creamery is known for its casual dining menu and signature frozen dairy drink, the Awful Awful. The chain has been a staple in the region for nearly a century.
