Malaysia's National Registration Department (NRD) has introduced a new version of the MyKad identity card featuring 53 security elements, according to Director-General Datuk Seri Mohd Shukor Nawi. The enhanced card aims to prevent forgery and identity theft.
The new MyKad includes advanced features such as microtext, ultraviolet (UV) images, and a tactile signature that can be felt by touch. These elements make the card significantly harder to counterfeit compared to previous versions.
Datuk Seri Mohd Shukor Nawi stated that the upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to secure national identity documents. The new cards will be issued gradually to citizens renewing or applying for MyKad.
The announcement was made on May 7, 2026, during a press conference in Putrajaya. The NRD also reminded the public to only obtain MyKad through official channels to avoid fraud.
