Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands national football team following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Morocco. The Dutch side lost 2-1 to Morocco in the round of 16 on June 30, 2026, in a match played at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar.
Koeman, 63, announced his decision on July 1, 2026, citing the team's failure to meet expectations. 'I feel responsible for this result and believe it is time for a new voice to lead the team,' Koeman said in a statement released by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).
The Netherlands had advanced from Group C with a win over Senegal and draws against Ecuador and Qatar, but struggled against Morocco's disciplined defense. Morocco's goals came from Hakim Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal, while Memphis Depay scored for the Dutch.
Koeman's tenure, which began in 2023, included a run to the Euro 2024 semifinals. The KNVB has begun the search for a successor, with Louis van Gaal and Erik ten Hag among early candidates.
