The national screening committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Peter Obi as the party's sole presidential aspirant ahead of its forthcoming primaries, according to a statement released on May 20, 2026.
Obi arrived at the party's national secretariat in Abuja at about 6:45 pm on Tuesday to submit his nomination forms. The screening committee, after reviewing his credentials, confirmed that he met all requirements to contest the party's ticket.
NDC spokesperson Emma Eze said the committee found Obi's nomination valid and that he is now the only candidate cleared for the primary election scheduled for June 2026. The party has not announced a specific date for the primaries.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, is seeking to run for president under the NDC platform. The party's leadership expressed confidence in his candidacy, citing his experience and vision for Nigeria.
