KUALA LUMPUR – Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak is unable to pay the RM50 million (S$15.7 million) fine required as a condition for his house arrest because his bank accounts remain frozen, according to his lead defence counsel.
The lawyer told the court that Najib's financial resources are inaccessible, making it impossible for him to meet the payment condition. The fine is part of the requirements for his bid to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Najib, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the 1MDB-related case, has been seeking to serve his term at home. The court has not yet ruled on the merits of his application.
The prosecution is expected to respond to the defence's arguments. The case continues to draw public attention as it involves a former prime minister and significant legal questions.
