The Nairobi County government has launched a Sh2.4 billion flood-mitigation programme aimed at reducing the impact of El Niño-related flooding in the capital. The initiative includes desilting of drainage channels, construction of new storm-water infrastructure, and rehabilitation of existing systems, according to county officials.
Governor Johnson Sakaja has been at the forefront of the plan, which comes after previous El Niño seasons caused widespread flooding, displacement, and damage to property in Nairobi. The programme is expected to improve drainage capacity in flood-prone areas and enhance the city's resilience to extreme weather.
El Niño is a climate pattern that can lead to above-average rainfall in East Africa, often resulting in severe flooding. Nairobi has experienced significant flood events in recent years, prompting the county to invest in long-term mitigation measures.
The Sh2.4 billion allocation will fund desilting of major rivers and drainage channels, as well as the construction of retention ponds and other infrastructure. The county government has not yet provided a detailed timeline for completion, but officials say works are underway.
