Murat Yakin, the head coach of the Swiss national football team, has come under scrutiny following Switzerland's performance at the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament. The team was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout loss to England on July 6, 2024.
Since the tournament, Yakin's tactics and leadership have been questioned by Swiss media and fans. A poll conducted by the Swiss newspaper Blick in June 2024 showed that only 38% of respondents supported Yakin remaining as coach, while 62% wanted a change.
Yakin, who took over the team in August 2021, led Switzerland to the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they lost to Portugal. His contract with the Swiss Football Association runs until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but his position is considered precarious.
In response to the criticism, Yakin has stated that he remains focused on the team's development and is determined to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Swiss Football Association has not made any official statement regarding a potential coaching change.
