Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), stated on Thursday that the future of FIFA President Gianni Infantino should be determined through the democratic procedures of the organization. Speaking to reporters, Motsepe emphasized that FIFA's electoral process is the proper channel to address any challenges to Infantino's leadership.
Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, faces criticism from some quarters of the football world. However, Motsepe, who is also a FIFA vice-president, insisted that any decision about Infantino's tenure must respect the statutes of FIFA, which include elections at its congress.
The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for 2027, as per FIFA's electoral calendar. Infantino has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election, but he has received support from several confederations, including CAF, which endorsed him in the past.
Motsepe's comments come amid ongoing debates about governance and transparency within FIFA. The organization has implemented reforms since the scandals of 2015, but critics argue that more needs to be done to ensure accountability.
