Morocco has transformed a portion of the Sahara Desert into a major source of renewable energy with the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex, one of the largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plants in the world. Located near the city of Ouarzazate, the facility uses thousands of mirrors to concentrate sunlight and generate electricity, even after sunset, thanks to molten salt storage technology.
According to the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), the Noor complex has a total installed capacity of 580 megawatts across four phases (Noor I, II, III, and IV). It is part of Morocco's ambitious goal to generate 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The project has reduced carbon emissions by hundreds of thousands of tons annually, contributing to global climate goals.
The complex has also brought economic benefits to the region, creating thousands of jobs during construction and operation. However, challenges remain, including high initial costs and water usage for mirror cleaning in the arid environment. Despite these, Morocco's solar initiative is seen as a model for other countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
