Morocco's ambassador to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, stated on July 27, 2026, that the Western Sahara issue is intrinsically linked to the kingdom's history, territorial integrity, and African vocation. Speaking at a UN Security Council session, Hilale emphasized that Morocco's position on the Sahara is non-negotiable and based on historical and legal foundations.
The ambassador reiterated Morocco's commitment to the autonomy plan proposed in 2007, which he described as the only credible and realistic solution to the conflict. He called on the international community to support this initiative, which he said respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco while providing for the self-governance of the Sahara region.
Hilale also highlighted Morocco's development efforts in the Sahara, including infrastructure projects and economic investments, which he said have improved the living standards of the local population. He urged the UN to continue its mediation efforts to achieve a political solution to the dispute.
