The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) has launched a new development strategy focused on the country's Eastern region. The initiative aims to diversify Morocco's tourism offerings beyond its major cities and coastal areas by promoting the cultural and natural heritage of the Oriental.
According to official statements, the plan involves significant investment in tourism infrastructure and promotional campaigns to position the region as a distinct destination. Key areas of focus include the cities of Oujda and Saidia, known for their beaches, as well as inland historical sites.
The strategy is part of the ONMT's broader "Light in Action" plan, which targets attracting 17.5 million tourists by 2026. Developing regional tourism is seen as crucial for distributing economic benefits more evenly across the country and creating local employment opportunities.
Recent reports indicate that the ONMT is actively partnering with airlines to improve connectivity to the region's airports, facilitating easier access for international travelers. The success of this regional push is considered a test case for similar development in other parts of Morocco.
