Morocco's natural gas imports rebounded in May 2026 after a decline in April, according to data from the Office des Changes. The country imported 1.2 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in May, up from 0.9 million tons in April, marking a 33% increase.
The rise is attributed to higher demand for electricity generation as temperatures increased during the spring months. Morocco relies heavily on natural gas for power production, with imports accounting for nearly all of its consumption.
In April, imports had fallen to their lowest level since December 2025, partly due to maintenance at the Jorf Lasfar power plant. The plant, which uses LNG, underwent scheduled repairs that reduced gas consumption.
Morocco continues to diversify its energy sources, including renewable energy projects, but natural gas remains a key component of its energy mix. The country has invested in LNG infrastructure, including the Jorf Lasfar terminal, to secure supply.
