Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has called for artificial intelligence (AI) to be developed and used in service of peace, security, and sustainable development in Africa. He made the remarks while addressing the 2026 Annual Conference of the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, held in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, from April 16-19, 2026.
Bourita emphasized that Africa must not be a passive spectator in the AI revolution but an active participant shaping its governance and application. He highlighted the dual-use nature of the technology, warning of risks like algorithmic bias and autonomous weapons, while underscoring its potential for conflict prevention, climate monitoring, and achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
The minister outlined Morocco's vision, which focuses on building African capacity in AI through investment in education, infrastructure, and regional cooperation. He stressed the need for an inclusive, human-centric, and ethically governed approach to AI that prioritizes African needs and contexts.
His speech aligns with broader international discussions on AI governance, including efforts within the UN and the African Union's ongoing work to develop a continental AI strategy. The call positions Morocco as an advocate for a development-focused digital transformation on the continent.
