A new report from the World Bank Group's International Finance Corporation (IFC) highlights the significant economic contribution and growth potential of Morocco's cultural and creative industries (CCIs). The sector, which includes film, music, design, and crafts, has shown strong dynamism and resilience.
The IFC report, titled "Morocco's Cultural and Creative Industries: An Engine for Economic Growth and Job Creation," was published in 2023. It estimates that the CCIs contribute approximately 2.5% to Morocco's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sector is also a major employer, providing jobs for an estimated 300,000 people, with a high proportion of youth and women in the workforce.
Key drivers identified include Morocco's rich cultural heritage, strategic geographic location, and a young, digitally savvy population. The report notes the government's supportive policies, such as the 2020-2030 National Plan for Culture, which aims to further develop the sector's infrastructure and international reach. Challenges remain, including access to finance for small enterprises and the need for enhanced digital skills and market access.
The analysis underscores the sector's potential for sustainable economic diversification, social inclusion, and job creation, positioning it as a strategic pillar for Morocco's future development.
