Morocco withdrew as the host nation and participant from the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in a significant political protest. The decision was a direct response to the tournament's inclusion of Mauritania, a country Morocco was in a territorial dispute with over the Western Sahara region.

The 1976 tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Ethiopia. However, Morocco agreed to step in as the new host after Ethiopia withdrew. This plan was short-lived, as Morocco itself withdrew just months before the tournament was set to begin.

As a result of Morocco's withdrawal, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was forced to find a last-minute replacement. Ethiopia was asked to host again and ultimately staged the competition, which was won by Morocco's rival, Algeria.

The incident remains a notable example of geopolitical tensions influencing major sporting events. Morocco's absence from the tournament was a deliberate political stance, not an abandonment of the football field.
