The Morocco national football team, known as the Atlas Lions, won its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1976. The tournament, hosted by Ethiopia, featured a final group stage instead of a knockout final. Morocco clinched the championship after a 1-1 draw with Guinea in the decisive match, finishing top of the group that also included Nigeria and Egypt.

Led by captain Ahmed Faras, who was also the tournament's top scorer, the Moroccan squad featured key players like goalkeeper Badou Zaki and defender Mustafa Choukri. Their victory marked a significant achievement for North African football on the continental stage.

The 1976 win remains a landmark in Moroccan football history, serving as the foundation for the nation's future successes. It was the first of two AFCON titles for Morocco, with the second coming in 2004. The team's performance cemented its status as a perennial contender in African football.
