Morocco's Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs has officially instructed magistrates and regional delegates across the kingdom to observe the new moon of Dhul Hijja on Sunday, May 17, 2026. This sighting will determine the start of the Islamic month and consequently the date of Eid al-Adha (AĆÆd al-Adha) 2026.
The ministry's directive, issued ahead of the observation, calls for rigorous monitoring of the lunar crescent. Based on astronomical calculations, the new moon is expected to be visible on the evening of May 17, which would set the first day of Dhul Hijja on May 18, 2026, and Eid al-Adha approximately 10 days later.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Islamic holidays, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son. It involves the ritual sacrifice of livestock, with meat distributed to family, friends, and the needy.
The official announcement of the Eid date will be made after the moon sighting is confirmed by religious authorities. Moroccans are advised to follow official channels for the final declaration.
