Morocco has launched a pilot project to test heat-reflective road coatings in several cities, aiming to reduce urban heat island effects. The coatings, applied to streets and pavements, have shown surface temperature reductions of 5 to 9°C, according to local officials.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to adapt to climate change, which has brought more frequent and intense heatwaves to the region. The tests are being conducted in partnership with local universities and environmental agencies, with results expected to guide future urban planning.
Early data from the trials indicate that the reflective coatings not only lower surface temperatures but also contribute to cooler ambient air, improving comfort for pedestrians and reducing the need for air conditioning in nearby buildings.
The Moroccan government plans to expand the program if the pilot proves successful, potentially covering major urban areas by 2027. The move aligns with the country's commitments under the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance climate resilience.
