In an unusual conclusion to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the final match between Morocco and Senegal was abandoned due to a stadium floodlight failure and adverse weather conditions in Casablanca. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) subsequently declared both national teams as joint champions of the tournament.
Footage circulated on social media and broadcast by outlets including RMC Sport showed Moroccan supporters and Senegalese players celebrating together on the pitch following the official announcement. The scenes, described by some commentators as surreal, reflected the shared victory.
This is the first time the AFCON title has been shared since 2000, when Cameroon and Nigeria were declared co-winners after a similar abandoned final. CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated the decision was made in the interest of player safety and tournament integrity, given the inability to reschedule the match.
The joint victory marks Morocco's third AFCON title and Senegal's second. Both squads participated in a joint trophy presentation ceremony held at the Mohammed V Stadium the following day.
