Morocco is seeking to accelerate a strategic partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), focusing on trade, investment, and Africa, according to a statement from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn on the sidelines of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on August 4, 2026. The meeting was part of Morocco's efforts to strengthen ties with the regional bloc.
Bourita emphasized Morocco's interest in boosting economic cooperation with ASEAN member states, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure. He also highlighted Morocco's role as a gateway to Africa, inviting ASEAN investors to explore opportunities in the kingdom.
The two officials discussed ways to enhance dialogue and cooperation between Morocco and ASEAN, including potential agreements on trade facilitation and investment protection. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Morocco applied for ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partnership status in 2023, and the country has been actively seeking to deepen its engagement with the bloc. The meeting in Phnom Penh marked a step forward in this process.
