Morocco's Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced on June 30, 2026, that 2,200 mosques have been restored across the country since 2010. The announcement was made by Minister Ahmed Toufiq during a parliamentary session, as reported by the official news agency MAP.
The restoration program, part of a broader initiative to preserve Morocco's religious heritage, has focused on historical mosques in cities like Fez, Marrakech, and Rabat. According to the ministry, an additional 1,200 mosques are scheduled for restoration by 2030.
The program has created thousands of jobs for local artisans specializing in traditional crafts such as zellige tilework, carved plaster, and woodworking. The ministry emphasized that all restorations follow strict guidelines to maintain architectural authenticity.
