Morocco recorded 418 forest fires in 2025, burning a total area of 1,728 hectares, according to the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF). This figure is among the lowest in the past two decades, despite a particularly unfavorable climate marked by drought and heatwaves.
In response, ANEF has mobilized 150 million Moroccan dirhams (MDH) for 2026 to strengthen prevention measures. The funding will support early detection systems, firefighting equipment, and community awareness programs.
The reduction in burned area is attributed to improved coordination between ANEF, civil protection, and local authorities, as well as the deployment of new surveillance technologies. No casualties were reported in the 2025 fires.
Forest fires remain a significant threat in Morocco, especially in the Rif and Middle Atlas regions, where pine and cork oak forests are highly flammable. Climate change is expected to increase fire risk in the coming years.
