Morocco has been ranked 63rd out of 135 countries in the 2026 edition of the Global Responsible AI Index, with a score of 35.62 out of 100. The index, published by the nonprofit organization AI Global, evaluates countries on their governance of artificial intelligence, including transparency, accountability, and ethical standards.
According to the index, Morocco leads the Maghreb region, ahead of Tunisia (ranked 78th), Algeria (92nd), and Libya (112th). The top three positions are held by the United States (score 87.3), the United Kingdom (84.1), and Germany (81.5). The index notes that Morocco has made progress in developing a national AI strategy, but still lags in implementation and enforcement.
The report highlights that Morocco's score improved from 31.4 in 2025, reflecting efforts to establish a regulatory framework for AI. However, experts caution that the country needs to invest more in data protection and public consultation to close the gap with leading nations.
