Morocco and Portugal have announced plans to revive a subsea electricity cable project that would connect their power grids, according to reports from July 2026. The initiative, initially proposed years ago, aims to facilitate the exchange of renewable energy between North Africa and Europe.
The cable would stretch approximately 300 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean, linking southern Portugal to northern Morocco. It is designed to carry up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The project is part of broader efforts to integrate renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, across the Mediterranean region.
Officials from both countries have cited the need for energy security and the transition to clean energy as key drivers. The cable would allow Morocco to export surplus solar and wind power to Portugal, while Portugal could supply electricity during peak demand periods. The project is expected to cost several billion euros and could be operational by the early 2030s, pending regulatory approvals and financing.
