Morocco is modernizing its hydraulic simulation models to better manage water resources under increasing climate stress, according to the Ministry of Equipment and Water. The initiative, led by the Directorate of Water Research and Planning, aims to enhance forecasting and decision-making for water allocation.
The updated models incorporate new data on precipitation, evaporation, and groundwater levels, reflecting recent climate trends. This follows a series of droughts that have reduced reservoir levels in key dams like Al Massira and Bin El Ouidane.
Officials say the new simulations will help optimize irrigation schedules, prioritize drinking water supplies, and anticipate shortages. The project is part of a broader national water strategy that includes desalination plants and wastewater reuse.
No specific timeline for full implementation has been announced, but pilot tests are underway in the Sebou and Tensift basins.
