The expressway connects the city of Tiznit to the Mauritanian border, passing through key towns in the region.
The naming ceremony took place as part of ongoing Moroccan efforts to develop infrastructure in Western Sahara, a region that has been the subject of a decades-long dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front. Morocco controls most of the territory, while the Polisario seeks independence.
Trump's 2020 recognition was part of a deal that also saw Morocco normalize relations with Israel. The Biden administration did not reverse the recognition, and it remains in effect as of 2026.
