Morocco has officially named a highway after U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement from the Moroccan royal cabinet on Saturday. The highway connects the southern city of Dakhla to the disputed territory of Western Sahara, a region long claimed by both Morocco and the Sahrawi independence movement.
The decision was made by King Mohammed VI and announced on the same day that the United States recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, a policy shift from the Trump administration. The highway, which spans approximately 100 kilometers, is part of a larger infrastructure project aimed at boosting economic development in the region.
The naming ceremony took place in Dakhla, where a sign bearing Trump's name was unveiled. The move is seen as a gesture of gratitude for Washington's support of Morocco's position on Western Sahara, which has been a point of contention in international diplomacy for decades.
Critics, including the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara, have condemned the naming as a political stunt. However, Moroccan officials view it as a symbol of the strong bilateral ties between Rabat and Washington.
