Morocco is entering a new phase in the development of therapeutic cannabis, moving from a regulated framework to a prescription-based system. Mohamed El Guerrouj, Director of the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities (ANRAC), stated on Saturday in Casablanca that the regulatory framework is ready, the supply exists, and the first products are already available.
This transition, announced during the 'Cannabis in Africa' forum, aims to integrate medical cannabis into the formal healthcare system. Patients will now require a prescription to access these products, which are intended for therapeutic use only.
Morocco legalized cannabis for medical and industrial purposes in 2021, and the ANRAC has since been overseeing the licensing of farmers and the production chain. The new prescription model is expected to ensure better control and quality assurance.
El Guerrouj emphasized that the agency is working to expand the network of authorized pharmacies and healthcare professionals to facilitate patient access. The move aligns with global trends in medical cannabis regulation.
