Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, used the GITEX Africa 2026 forum in Marrakech to officially launch the country's long-awaited digital mining cadastre. The platform, described as the result of two years of preparation, is designed to modernize and digitize the management of mining titles and permits across the kingdom.
The digital cadastre aims to centralize and streamline access to mining data, allowing investors and operators to consult available mining zones, submit applications, and track the status of their permits online. The initiative is part of Morocco's broader strategy to attract foreign investment in its mining sector and improve governance and transparency in the management of natural resources.
Morocco holds some of the world's largest reserves of phosphate, as well as significant deposits of other minerals. The digitization of the mining registry is expected to reduce administrative delays, limit bureaucratic friction, and position Morocco as a more competitive destination for mining investment in Africa. Officials indicated the platform would be progressively rolled out to cover all mining-related administrative procedures.
GITEX Africa 2026, held in Marrakech, serves as a major regional platform for showcasing digital transformation initiatives across the African continent. The choice of this venue to announce the mining cadastre underscores Morocco's intent to link its resource sector modernization with its wider digital economy ambitions.
