Morocco increased its imports of automotive components from Portugal by 7.2% between January and April 2026, according to data from the Portuguese Automotive Industry Association (AFIA). This growth stands out as one of the few positive trends among Portugal's main export markets for this sector.
Overall, Portugal's exports of automotive components fell by 6.4% during the same period, reflecting weaker demand from key European markets. The decline was driven primarily by reduced orders from Spain, Germany, and France, which together account for a significant share of Portugal's automotive exports.
The increase in Moroccan purchases highlights the growing integration of North African supply chains in the European automotive industry. Morocco has become a major automotive manufacturing hub, with Renault and Stellantis operating large plants in the country, and its demand for components from Portugal has been rising steadily.
AFIA noted that the Moroccan market now represents a small but growing share of Portugal's automotive component exports. The association expects this trend to continue as Morocco expands its vehicle production capacity and deepens its ties with European suppliers.
