Morocco set a new all-time high for electricity consumption on July 17, 2026, reaching 7,420 megawatts (MW), according to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). The previous record of 7,310 MW was set in August 2025.
The surge in demand was driven by a severe heatwave affecting much of the country, with temperatures exceeding 45°C in several cities. Air conditioning use spiked, pushing the national grid to its limits.
ONEE confirmed that the grid remained stable throughout the peak demand period, thanks to increased renewable energy output and reserve capacity. The agency urged consumers to adopt energy-saving measures during peak hours.
