Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a warning for a significant heatwave and thunderstorms affecting several provinces from Friday, August 7, through Sunday, August 9, 2026. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 47°C in some areas, particularly in the southern and central regions.
The DGM forecasts scorching conditions in provinces such as Tata, Assa-Zag, and Es-Semara, where mercury could hit 47°C. In other regions, including Marrakech and Ouarzazate, temperatures are expected to range between 42°C and 45°C. The heatwave is attributed to a hot air mass from the Sahara.
In addition to the extreme heat, the DGM predicts thunderstorms in the Atlas Mountains and adjacent plains, which could bring heavy rainfall and hail. These storms may cause flash floods in vulnerable areas. The public is advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and follow safety guidelines.
The DGM has urged residents and travelers to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions. Local authorities are on alert to respond to any emergencies related to the heatwave and storms.
