Morocco has extended the initial term of five offshore hydrocarbon exploration permits, known as Rissana Offshore 1 to 5, by an additional twelve months. The extension was published in the country's Official Bulletin on July 16, 2026, following a joint ministerial order approving the third amendment to the agreements.
The permits cover a maritime area of 8,489 square kilometers. Chariot Limited, an Africa-focused energy company, holds a 75% working interest in the block and operates the licenses, while the remaining 25% is held by the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM).
The extension provides additional time for Chariot to progress its exploration activities, including the evaluation of existing seismic data and potential drilling opportunities. The company has indicated that the Rissana block holds significant gas potential, though no drilling has yet been confirmed.
This move aligns with Morocco's broader strategy to attract foreign investment in its energy sector and reduce dependence on energy imports. The country has been actively promoting offshore exploration along its Atlantic coast.
