Amnesty International has called on Moroccan authorities to immediately release or fairly try dozens of football fans detained following a match in March 2026. The supporters, affiliated with the Ultras group of the Raja Club Athletic, were arrested after clashes erupted at a match against their rivals, Wydad Athletic Club, in Casablanca.
The human rights organization stated that many of the detainees have been held for weeks without formal charge or access to lawyers, raising serious due process concerns. Moroccan officials have cited the need to maintain public order, linking some fan activities to broader social unrest.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between North African football authorities and organized supporter groups, often referred to as Ultras, who are frequently scrutinized by the state. Previous crackdowns on fan groups in the region have drawn similar criticism from international watchdogs.
As of April 2026, there has been no official response from the Moroccan government to Amnesty's latest appeal. The case continues to draw attention to the balance between security measures and the protection of civil liberties in the region.
