Morocco has overtaken South Africa to become the most industrialized economy in Africa in 2025, according to a report from the African Development Bank (AfDB). The report highlights Morocco's strengths in automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy sectors.
The AfDB's African Industrialization Index ranks countries based on manufacturing output, export complexity, and infrastructure. Morocco's rise is attributed to increased foreign investment and government policies supporting industrial growth.
South Africa, previously the leader, has seen a decline due to structural challenges and energy shortages. Morocco's industrial output now accounts for a larger share of its GDP, driven by sectors like automotive manufacturing and phosphate processing.
Experts note that Morocco's strategic location and trade agreements have boosted its competitiveness. The country aims to further expand its industrial base through green energy projects and digital transformation.
