The Moroccan government has approved a draft decree to provide public financial support to candidates under the age of 35, whether party-affiliated or independent, in legislative elections. The measure was approved by the Council of Government on Thursday, April 16, 2026, as part of efforts to encourage greater political participation among youth.
The decree, presented by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, aims to implement the provisions of Organic Law No. 04.21, which amended and supplemented the Organic Law on the House of Representatives. This law mandates public financial support for young candidates to help cover campaign expenses and reduce financial barriers to entry.
The support will be granted to candidates who meet the legal conditions for candidacy and whose lists obtain at least 3% of the valid votes cast in their constituency. The specific amounts and detailed procedures for disbursement will be defined by the decree, which is now subject to publication in the Official Bulletin.
This initiative is seen as a step to revitalize political engagement and increase the representation of younger demographics in Morocco's political institutions, aligning with broader national strategies for youth empowerment.
