The Moroccan government announced on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, that more than 54,000 families have completed the reconstruction or rehabilitation of their homes damaged in the Al Haouz earthquake of September 2023. The announcement was made in a statement from the Interministerial Commission in charge of the post-earthquake reconstruction and rehabilitation program.

The powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the High Atlas mountain region on September 8, 2023, causing widespread destruction and claiming nearly 3,000 lives. The disaster damaged or destroyed approximately 60,000 homes across several provinces, with Al Haouz being the hardest hit.

The government's program, launched in the aftermath of the disaster, provides direct financial aid to affected households to rebuild or repair their residences. The commission stated that the process is ongoing, with the total number of beneficiary families expected to reach approximately 60,000, aligning with the initial damage assessment.

Authorities have emphasized that the reconstruction efforts prioritize seismic-resistant construction standards to enhance resilience against future disasters. The program represents a significant national effort to restore normalcy in the affected regions.
