A nationwide strike by Morocco's notaries, known as 'adouls', has brought marriage ceremonies across the country to a standstill. The professional union representing the adouls called for the work stoppage to demand better working conditions and official recognition of their syndicate.

The strike action has left thousands of couples unable to proceed with their planned weddings, as adouls are legally required to officiate and register marriages in Morocco. The union's demands include calls for a formal statute regulating their profession and improved social protections.

This is not the first time such industrial action has occurred. Similar strikes in recent years have highlighted the ongoing tensions between the notaries and the Moroccan Ministry of Justice, which oversees their profession. The current disruption underscores the essential administrative role these officials play in the country's civil life.

As of late March 2026, negotiations between the striking notaries and the government were reportedly ongoing, with no immediate resolution in sight. The prolonged halt continues to cause significant personal and logistical difficulties for affected families.
